Exploring the Potential of Mass Timber Construction

Organized By: The Center for International Trade in Forest Products (CINTRAFOR), and Oregon State University (OSU)

Workshop co-led by Prof. Indroneil Ganguly and Prof. Arijit Sinha

Date: 19 December 2024

Sponsored by: Softwood Export Council (SEC) https://www.softwood.org/

Venue: Magnolia Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi

Attendance: 45 participants

The workshop aimed to delve into the potential of mass timber as a sustainable construction material in India. The workshop specifically focused on addressing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of using mass timber as a building material, while exploring challenges and solutions.

A full-day mass-timber workshop was organized for the 19th of December at the India Habitat Center in Delhi. A total of 12 presentations and a group discussion were organized. The USDA-FAS representative also came and gave the welcome speech.

The primary questions posed during the group discussion were (i) Can the building construction sector in India become a solution to mitigate climate change by reducing its use of concrete and acting as a long-term storage of biogenic carbon in its structural components?, and (ii) Is masstimber technology the right solution for India?

The answer was a resounding “yes!”, followed by a plan for ‘how the Indian building community, the government, and academia can forge the path forward’. Based on the enthusiasm of the attendees and the positive updates from the government and building industry representatives, this line of outreach work by CINTRAFOR, in collaboration with SEC and OSU, will likely continue.

Forest Product Infrastructure and Resource Mapping Workshop

Organized by: Center for International Trade of Forest Products (CINTRAFOR) and William D. Ruckelshaus Center

Date: May 29, 2024

Venue: WA Department of Commerce, Olympia, WA, USA

Attendance: 42 participants

Washington State’s forests and wood products industry hold immense Natural Climate Solution (NCS) potential. This potential could only be realized through a combination of short and long-term planning, ensuring (i) increased sequestration of biogenic carbon in the forests, (ii) fostering a robust and diversified wood products industry, (iii) ensuring balanced investment in all the components of the forest products industry ranging from forest roads to access to local and global markets, and (iv) a well-trained forestry workforce with family-wage jobs. The findings of this workshop laid out the foundation for our collective efforts to mitigate the challenges and ensure a well-rounded success in achieving the aforementioned goals.
